Matale Hindu Temple & Spice Garden

Your day begins in Matale with a visit to the impressive Sri Muthumariamman Hindu Temple. This colorful temple is dedicated to Goddess Mariamman and features stunning South Indian-style architecture with many beautifully carved statues. It is a vibrant place where you can experience the living Hindu traditions of Sri Lanka and witness daily rituals if the timing is right. Right next door, we stop at a lush Spice & Herbal Garden. Stroll through the garden filled with aromatic plants and learn about Sri Lanka’s world-renowned spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, nutmeg, and pepper. The knowledgeable guide will explain how these spices are grown, their medicinal uses in Ayurveda, and their importance in Sri Lankan cuisine. You can taste fresh herbal tea and purchase pure spices, oils, and herbal products as meaningful souvenirs to take home.

Dambulla Cave Temple

We then reach the magnificent Dambulla Cave Temple complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dating back more than 2,000 years, this rock temple consists of five caves filled with hundreds of Buddha statues and exquisite colorful murals. The largest cave alone contains over 150 statues, including a massive reclining Buddha. The ancient paintings on the cave ceilings and walls depict important Buddhist stories and are considered masterpieces of Sri Lankan art. After climbing a short flight of stairs, you will be rewarded with peaceful views over the surrounding countryside. This sacred site continues to be an active place of worship and offers a deeply spiritual experience.

Lunch Break

We stop at a convenient local restaurant for a well-deserved lunch (lunch cost not included). Enjoy authentic Sri Lankan rice and curry or other local dishes before continuing your adventure.

Sigiriya Lion Rock Fortress (or Pidurangala Rock)

One of the absolute highlights of the day is the majestic Sigiriya Lion Rock. Rising dramatically 200 meters above the flat plains, this ancient rock fortress was built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century AD. As you climb the iron staircases, you will pass the famous Sigiriya Frescoes — beautiful paintings of heavenly maidens that have survived for centuries. At the top, explore the remains of the ancient palace and enjoy breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views of the jungle, lakes, and distant mountains. The giant lion paws carved into the rock at the entrance give this iconic site its name.

If you prefer a less crowded experience or a more challenging hike, we can visit nearby Pidurangala Rock instead. From the top of Pidurangala, you get a stunning view directly facing Sigiriya Rock. Both options offer incredible photo opportunities and a real sense of ancient grandeur.

Polonnaruwa Ancient City

In the afternoon, we arrive at the magnificent Polonnaruwa Ancient City, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. This was the second capital of Sri Lanka after Anuradhapura. The well-preserved ruins spread across a large area and include royal palaces, Buddhist monasteries, beautiful statues, and impressive stupas. Highlights include the Gal Vihara — a group of magnificent rock-cut Buddha statues carved from a single granite rock, the impressive King Parakramabahu’s Palace, and the ancient Council Chamber with its beautifully carved stone pillars. Walking through these ancient ruins feels like stepping back into the 12th century when Polonnaruwa was a thriving city. The site is relatively flat and easy to explore with your guide explaining the fascinating history of each monument.
